The concept now turns into reality! $100 laptop is soon to bring big smiles on the faces of pupils in rural South American hamlet. The five years old concept of $100 laptop project finally gets the green light to ramp-up production of this low-cost machine. This low cost machine is scheduled to hit the streets this October.

The concept took five years of designing, collaboration and innovation for bringing the $100 laptop to this stage and this has been a turbulent journey for One Laptop per Child (OLPC), the organization behind the scheme and its founder Nicholas Negroponte.

Some critics’ notion is that such a cheap device could not offer the technology or durability required to be beneficial. Others pointed out that the target third-world countries had more burning problems, such as starvation, dehydration and disease.

But for OLPC this endeavor is not a gift of modern technology, but rather an educational initiative and ‘an expression of global solidarity’ that would ‘open up new fronts’ for children’s education.

The innovative design of the XO machine is impressive, even to critics. This innovative ‘XO’ device is designed to run on less than 10% of the power required by an ordinary laptop. The main purpose of developing XO is to cope with the harsh and remote conditions found in areas where it may be used, such as the deserts of Libya or the mountains of Peru.

The software, memory, and screen are all designed to minimize energy consumption. The battery-run XO can even be recharged with solar cells, or human-operated foot pumps or pull-string chargers, and last four times as long as an average battery.

The laptop will initially cost $176 but the organization predicts that the price will drop to the target $100 as manufacturing and improvements are integrated.

Is that a book on the table? Well, it’s a notebook. The picture above is not anything else but, a Asus U3 laptop released in the market. Asus, the laptop manufacturing company has been developing some pretty innovative products lately. The latest in the market is the 13inch ultra portable U3 laptop.

The U3 is well equipped with a Santa Rosa chipset. This laptop is probably one of the fewer models which use the low voltage intel dual core processor. The best part about this baby is it’s packed with a host of technologies. It has a HDMI, GPS, S-video and eSATA. This is the first time I am hearing about a laptop equipped with a GPS. I think that’s a great deal.

The antenna port of the laptop is built in on the right side of the laptop. The laptop will have firewire ports along with ExpressCard 54 slots.

The exterior is finished in superior piano black leather approved by Billy Joel. Now this yet another interesting part. I wonder how Billy Joel fits in the equation. Moving on, the exterior also provides a set of USB ports just like any other laptops.

The laptop is priced at around $2000. However, this depends on the dealers. For this price tag, the company provides a great laptop with a LED backlit variety screen. The narrow and slim profile makes this laptop slim and as they claim ultra portable. Even though the pricing information has been released, we haven’t managed to get a release date yet.

Sony’s laptop batteries are again becoming a problem. Last year, Toshiba recalled 830,000 notebook batteries and now, they have made a recall for another 10,000 Sony laptop batteries. Three of the machines were reported to go up in smoke between September 2006 and June 2007. No injuries have been reported, but the recall has once again raised the concerns with the Sony notebook batteries.

One of the cardinal principles: sign on a cheque and write ‘only’ in the amount column, no matter how big the amount actually is. Unfortunately, I can never do that without a lingering feeling of irony. So once in a while I write a cheque where I write only really meaning it. Here’s my chance and i believe yours too.

‘Cause, if you are looking ahead to hunt some inexpensive laptop, Medison a Swedish consulting company can light your way with their newly unveiled economical notebook called Medison Celebrity laptop for merely $150.

This Medison Celebrity laptop features standard hardware: a 14-inch WXGA screen, an optimized Fedora Linux install, a 1.5GHz Celeron processor, 256MB of RAM, 40GB of storage, a CD / DVD combo drive, 802.11g WiFi, built-in webcam and VIA PN800 integrated graphics.

The best part is that you can also purchase a license from Microsoft for Windows XP, if you are not comfortable with Linux. This cost-effective notebook is not yet available but it will hit US and European shelves sometimes in 4-6 weeks and everything for just $150 only.

Normally manufacturer designs notebooks with some unique class stuff to give smooth and silky looks to their products but now to offer some conventional looks the S-series notebook concept is designed via wood.

This new concept that appears interesting to me, sports ultra-thin 4mm thick LCD screens, at 17″ wide, and runs Windows Vista whereas the back of the screen comes dished in black acrylic with a wood base and targets business users.

Designed by Simon Enever this funky laptop designing with glossy looks will really make my office look cool and arresting, because I think that I am big wood-hugger.

LAPTOPS FOR WOMEN

Laptops are a great invention. Not only do you have the convenience of using your computer anywhere you may need it, be it on a plane or in a small café, but you also get the added convenience of being able to carry it with you with a virtually weightless ease. Women are especially appreciative of laptops, simply because they are slim and sleek and most will just about fit inside a handbag sized case. Given those statements, there are a few laptops that, although they probably were not designed specifically for women, they really seem as if they were.

The X2 StyleBook and the Tulip E-Go certainly come to mind when determining the best laptops for women. Both are designed more along the lines of fashion accessories, as opposed to computers. Their beauty and style are highly favored among women professionals, however, their computing technology rank among the very best as far as laptops go.

The StyleBook weighs only 3.9 pounds, and is available in pastel green, blue, pink, white, metallic black, and silver. Each of the colors also has an available matching bag to carry the StyleBook in that is made of your choice of leather, suede, micro fiber, or faux crocodile skin. The StyleBook is definitely one of those creations that seems as if it were made for women.

Another great choice for women is the Sony Vaio VGN-T350. This little beauty is stylish and sleek and weighs in at only 3.1 pounds, which makes it great for carrying everywhere.

X2 StyleBook Sony Vaio VGN-T350 Tulip E-Go

All these choices are wonderful for women, due to the color choices of each and the virtually weightless carrying. The matching bags simply add to the attraction. For professional women everywhere, a big thanks to the makers of the “women” laptops. With beautiful colors and fabulous matching bags and accessories, it is wonderful to know that women can find a highly functional laptop, and one that lends to the fashion and design that we all try to present. These make it much easier to show our feminine side, with beautifully designed and stylish laptops geared for women, that still do the job of the larger computers that our men use.

I would call this a convenient retrogression. There is hardly any doubt that Blu-ray and HD-DVD drives are still low on the priority lists of buyers. Perhaps, due to the limited knowledge they have about these drives. And, in such a scenario, Sony doesn’t want to take chances. It reflects in the latest release of its conventional CD/DVD burners – the S70 and the 840 series.

The multi-format disc drives feature a distinct variety of slim, external drives and internal models that offer the best of both worlds. The DRX-S70U is slim and sleek and offers burn speeds as follows:

- 8X DVD+/-R
- 4X DVD+/-R DL
- 8X DVD+RW
- 6X DVD-RW
- 24X CD-R/RW

The 840 series – DRU-840A and DRX-840U offer the same burn speeds as shown below:

- 20X DVD+/-R
- 12X DVD+/-R DL
- 12X DVD+RW
- 6X DVD-RW
- 48X CD-R
- 32X CD-RW

However, the difference between the two is that the former is internal while the latter is external. Additionally, the DRU-840A is an ATAPI (EIDE) drive. On the other hand, the DRX-840U can be connected via USB 2.0 (or USB 1.1, with slower write speeds) to offer the ultimate portability.

The drives are incorporated with Nero 7 Express.

With the variety, Sony looks to cater to the laptop market and the PC market at the same time. The drives will be available from September. The pricing of DRX-840U & DRX-S70U is $110 and $130 respectively, while the DRU-840A is currently on the stands for $70.

Well, now you can let your children explore the dark side of the Force while they try to learn something from the Darth Vader laptop.

The computer lets your kid choose 50 different games. Your child will develop typing ability, coordination, and musical abilities. Also, children using this laptop will have better reflexes.

Well, if you trust the Darth Vader with kids, keep an eye out for more information on this. This can be your child’s next birthday gift.

Lenovo has just announced that the company will soon start selling its new laptops to businesses and other consumers with pre-installed Linux, which is emerging fast as a successful substitute to Microsoft Windows.

The laptops are ready and will hit our shelves sometimes at the end of this year. Early this year Dell too dropped Linux-powered laptops based on customer suggestions for new products, whose results revealed high Linux PC demands.

Linux was first introduced to the public approximately 16 years ago and was developed by Linus Torvalds who aimed to build a non-commercial substitute for an operating system used in many universities. Primarily, Linux is used to power web servers, the time when its growth on desktop computers was confined as per technology specialists, but its practice by brand names like Lenovo and Dell widened its growth and future prospects.

According to analysts, around 6% of computers users run Linux that is comparatively similar to consumers choosing Apple Macs.

The time is not far when our children will carry laptops to their schools instead of carrying hefty bags packed with books, thanks to The One Laptop Per Child Project that can really make it happen.

Now, the latest update unveils that to promote the project and by ignoring previous differences, Intel has finally made his mind to take a seat amid OLPC Board of Directors. Intel will also grant some funds to the project and in conjunction with OLPC, it will also help the project to explore apposite technology and educational content.

Differences Aroused:

The difference aroused when OLPC’s braintrust Nicholas Negroponte went at CBS’s 60 Minutes in May to talk about OLPC’s aims and objectives and to introduce its XO laptop, he blamed Intel for cruel patronage by saying that Intel should be ashamed of itself for proposing their Classmate PC, the PC due to which company suffered heavy losses. Now, might be via some MOU (Memorandum of Understanding)and forgeeting all their tussles, the world leader in technology, Intel has joined hands with the OPLPC to facilitate world’s children with affordable laptops.

Now, according to Nicholas Negroponte:

Collaboration with Intel means that the maximum number of laptops will reach children

Nevertheless, it does not mean that by taking seat among OLPC Board of Directors, Intel will stop the development of their Classmate PC program and by this OLPC will not make detailed assessments of its hardware choices; the quality parameters and aims and objective of both the units will still remain same.

Walter Bender, president of software and content at OLPC asserted:

We are going to be continuously evolving and improving the XO, with the goal of driving down the price, lowering the power consumption, improving performance, and improving robustness. There are many platforms and architectures we will consider going forward and likely we will be offering a family of solutions to fit multiple needs.

It is noteworthy that India is also looking ahead to develop $10 laptop after rejecting Nicholas Negroponte’s proposal of $100 laptop for schoolchildren.
